Types of Solar Hot Water We offer at Solar Express

  • Evacuated Tube Solar Hot Water

Water heating accounts for about 30 percent of an average household’s total greenhouse gas emissions and about the same proportion of total household energy use. Installing a solar water heater can greatly reduce your energy bills as it will use energy from the sun to heat water at zero cost.

Solar Express - Solar Evacuated geyser how it works

What are Evacuated Tubes?
Solar Hot Water Systems from Solar Express use the exceptional efficiency and power of Evacuated Tube Technology. This breakthrough technology is recognized around the world as a much better way to heat water using the sun’s endless energy.
Evacuated Tubes from Solar Express provide a new level of performance and expectation in the solar water heating industry. They deliver many advantages over all other types of solar heaters.
Evacuated Tubes are a proven technology now widely accepted in South Africa… all the way from consumers and plumbers.
Solar Expresses reputation has been earned through our attention to detail, product quality & performance… and our exceptional service levels and experience.
Solar Express is recognised as the leader in advanced solar thermal design and has many years of expertise in solar. Solar Express stands apart from all other Evacuated Tube suppliers in the market. Give us a call to find out more.
All Evacuated Tube products from Solar Express are CE Standards approved.
Evacuated Tubes are sleek, stylish and super-efficient. They work by absorbing the sun’s energy, trapping it like a giant thermos flask, and efficiently transferring heat to the water supply.

How do Evacuated Tubes Works?

Vacuum

Each Evacuated Tube consists of 2 layers of Borosilicate glass with a vacuum layer between them. This vacuum provides superb insulation and helps to retain an amazing amount of heat… up to 97% of the sun’s thermal energy is held in the tube.
Absorber Coating
Each Evacuated Tube has a special coating on the inner tube layer. This coating absorbs radiation from the sun. The sun’s energy is then trapped inside the tube by the vacuum.
The coating is formulated to catch as much of the sun’s energy as possible, but at the same time not lose it through radiation.
Of course, the performance of any Evacuated Tube coating depends on it’s formulation and its quality.
Solar Express uses only the best, premium quality absorber coating for our Evacuated Tubes.
Heat Pipe – A simple and effective thermal engine
The sun’s thermal energy is transferred to the water supply at the top of the solar collector via a heat pipe located in the centre of each tube. Inside the heat pipe there is a partial vacuum that contains a small amount of evaporative liquid.
As the Evacuated Tube is heated by the sun, the liquid in the heat pipe changes state and becomes a gas. The gas rises to the top of each pipe. The rising gas carries the heat to the top of the collector.
The cold water in the tank is circulated through the top of the collector and absorbs this heat. The heated water is then returned and stored in a storage vessel on the ground.

The Result

The result is an incredibly efficient system to harness the heat of the sun even in extremely cold areas. Because the system is so efficient it does not require full sun and it can work in cloudy or even rainy days.
Why are Solar Expresses Evacuated Tubes so Efficient?
Evacuated Tube technology delivers significantly better performance than traditional ‘flat plate’ collectors on the market today. They are incredibly efficient, and don’t lose energy when the weather is cold.
Evacuated Tube products supplied by Solar Express are also known to perform exceptionally well when compared to other types of Evacuated Tubes.
The round surface of each tube passively tracks the sun as it moves across the sky. This means that the face of the absorber in each tube is always perpendicular to the sun, and the round surface of the tube catches and re-directs the sun’s energy inside.
The secret to the brilliant performance of Evacuated Tubes in cold weather is the superb insulation provided by the vacuum in between the two layer of glass. This ensures that the sun’s energy you are catching is not lost. Other systems lose heat when it’s cool outside.

The Solar Express system is a ‘split system.’ The sun’s heat energy is captured by a stylish, low profile solar collector on your roof and stored in a geyser.

Solar Geysers Direct 021 5562413

The system can be boosted, when required, by electricity. The superior performance of a Endless Solar system means that for a large part of the year you will experience a reduction in your energy bills as the supplimentary boosting is generally very low. Once you install a high performance system from Endless Solar, the savings start immediately.

Solar Express state-of-the-art Evacuated Tube technology is a clever and cost effective alternate to traditional ‘flat plate panel’ solar collectors.
Although Evacuated Tubes are relatively new to the South African market, they were invented in Australia over 30 years ago and are a well proven, superior technology, widely used around the world.
By replacing the flat plate with an array of Evacuated Tubes, the solar express collectors are able to collect more of the sun’s energy and convert more of that energy into hot water.

collector

Solar Geysers Direct 021 5562413
The tubes consist of 2 layers of ‘Borosilicate’ glass (very strong hardened glass) with a vacuum between these 2 layers.
This ‘evacuated’ layer in the tubes acts much like a thermos flask. The remarkable insulation provided by the vacuum captures and retains about 97% of the energy absorbed from the sun. This dramatically increases the efficiency of the collector and also protects it from the effects of cold air (the water in flat plate panels can freeze in very cold areas – destroying the panel).
The sun’s energy absorbed by the tubes is then transferred to your water via a special heat pipe inside each tube.
A small amount of evaporative liquid inside each heat pipe is turned to gas by the sun’s energy. This gas then rises to the tips of the pipes which are inserted into an insulated heat transfer manifold located on your roof. Cold water is then pumped through this manifold absorbing the heat and storing it in water tank.
The result is an incredibly efficient system to harness the heat of the sun even in extremely cold areas. Because the system is so efficient it does not require full sun and it can work in cloudy or even rainy days.
An Evacuated Tube solar collector is the perfect system for very cold areas, and is the only reliable solution for the South African climate.

Cape Solar Geysers uses only the highest quality materials that handle the rigors of the South African climate. A solar hot water system from Cape Solar Geysers will work better, keep performing… and last longer.

Cape Solar Geysers Evacuated Tubes are built for strength without compromising their optical properties. Cape Solar Geysers collectors have passed the AS/NZS 2712 :2007 Standards for Impact Resistance.

However, if some of the tubes are damaged, our clever design means that:

  1. Your system doesn’t stop working
  2. It won’t leak
  3. It’s quick, cheap and easy to replace any damaged tubes

Cape Solar Geysers Systems are modular, lightweight and easy to integrate with any house or
project.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have a question.

No. Due to the significantly better optical properties of a Cape Solar Geysers Evacuated Tube collector, you can locate your collector on a roof facing north-east or north-west with only a minimal reduction in efficiency. You can even place the collector on an east or west facing roof.

The optimal place to locate your solar collector is on a north facing roof.

Even if the only unshaded place to mount the collector is on a south facing roof, it can be mounted on a reverse frame facing north.

There are numerous benefits that Evacuated Tubes offer over the traditional “flat plate” panels. Although Evacuated Tubes are relatively new to the South African market,  and they are a well proven, superior technology, widely used around the world:

Increased Efficiency

Flat plate panels only provide peak energy output at midday, when the sun is perpendicular to the panel’s surface. At other times of the day, the heat collection of a flat plate panel is either increasing or decreasing.

The round shape of Evacuated Tubes means that the sun is always perpendicular to the surface of the tube throughout the day, resulting in higher energy collection from early morning through to late afternoon.

Evacuated Tubes can absorb the sun’s energy from a wide range of angles and can be mounted on even east or west facing roofs with only a small decrease in performance. The tolerance to a broad spectrum of radiation means that the Cape Solar Geysers collector can operate effectively under a diverse range of conditions including low light.

This versatility means that you’re not limited to where you place the collector, unlike older technology such as flat plate panels.

Minimal Heat Loss

Since air is removed (evacuated) from the glass tubes to form a vacuum, the insulating properties of the tubes is extremely high. As a result, wind and cold temperatures outside only minimally affects the efficiency of an Evacuated Tube collector.

With Evacuated Tubes, the collected heat is conducted to the cold water using a specially designed heat pipe. Well over 95% of the heat captured in the tubes is held in the collector.

Natural Frost Protection

Cape Solar Geysers collectors can be used in sub-zero temperatures without damaging the system. In contrast, under similar conditions, flat plate panels require expensive and complicated “antifreeze” systems to be installed (remember this when comparing system costs).

The glycol that is used in flat plate systems needs to be regularly replaced in order to prevent damage through freezing. This is an ongoing cost, requiring replacement of the glycol every 3 years or so, with the added risk of glycol leaking into gutters or
rainwater tanks at times of glycol changeover, or if the flat panel is damaged by storms.

Superior Winter Performance

The high solar energy absorption of the Cape Solar Geysers Evacuated Tube collectors, even during overcast conditions, combined with the superior insulating properties of the tubes, provides excellent water heating all year round. While some flat plate panels may produce similar heat output in summer conditions, they generally have reduced performance during winter – when you need the most hot water.

The high-efficiency, robust construction and long service life of Cape Solar Geysers systems makes a compelling case for purchasing our product.
